The moments right after a car accident are stressful, and stress makes it easy to forget the steps that protect you later. Here is a clear, calm walkthrough of the first 24 hours after a collision in New Jersey, from the scene to the repair.
At the scene: safety first
Before anything else, check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911. If the vehicles are drivable and blocking traffic, move them to the shoulder. Turn on your hazard lights.
Once everyone is safe, call the police. In New Jersey you are required to report any accident that causes injury, death, or property damage that looks to be over 500 dollars, which covers almost any collision worth repairing. A police report also creates an official record, and that record matters when you file your claim.
Document everything
Your phone is the most useful tool you have right now. Take photos of all the vehicles involved, the damage on each, the license plates, the road, any skid marks, and the surrounding area. More photos is always better than fewer. If there are witnesses, ask for their names and numbers.
Exchange information with the other driver: name, phone, license plate, insurance company, and policy number. You do not need to exchange more than that.
